Itinerary

Travel Route SwedenOn this 9 day tour through Sweden, we give you a taste of all the wonderful things Sweden has to offer: beautiful cities, breathtaking nature and delicious vegan food. We start our tour in Gothenburg, from which we drive through the lush forests of middle Sweden to Karlstad and Mora, the cradle of Swedish culture, to arrive in Sweden's capital: Stockholm.

Day 1 & 2 – Gothenburg

Gothenburg CityOur vegan travel to Sweden starts on the morning of the first day. Our hotel is situated in the city center, in walking distance of all the sights Gothenburg has to offer. If you have not spent the night in our group hotel, you are expected to arrive there no later than 09.00 am for an introduction and to meet your fellow travelers.

It is up to you when you want to arrive in Sweden. If you want to arrive a few days before the tour starts, we will gladly help you to arrange a hotel room for you.

City Walk

After breakfast you will meet your fellow travelers and your tour leader in the hotel for a brief introduction. From there, we will go on a city walk through Gothenburg. Gothenburg has a rich history. The city is full of beautiful buildings and monuments, serene parks and enjoyable spots on the waterfront. We will visit the vibrant streets of Haga, with its charming shops and cafés, where we will enjoy lunch at a Vegan café. For a beautiful view over the city, you can climb Skansen Kronan. At the end of the walk, you can take a relaxing ferry in the harbor and see the Gothenburg sights from the water. Enjoy a vegan meal in one of the many vegan restaurants Gothenburg has to offer. Gothenburg is truly a vegan paradise!

Gothenburg Isles

On day 2 we will explore one of the many islands off the coast of Gothenburg. A relaxing tram and boat ride away, you will find yourself on a typical Swedish island. Here, you can relax on one of the tiny beaches and explore the forests and boulders that make up the island. Drink a cup of coffee in one of the small cafés and head back to the boat. You can chose to stay a little longer, or go back to Göteborg for a lunch in the city. The rest of the afternoon, you have all to yourself. Your tour leader can offer you many fun and interesting suggestions.

Day 3 – Gothenburg to Karlstad

MarstrandToday, we will take our own mini-bus up along the coast of West Sweden. We will stop in Marstrand and take the ferry to the island, where we you can walk around the island, visit a real Swedish castle, or stroll along the boulevard shops. We lunch in Kungälv where we have found some excellent vegan options for you. Back on the road, we head inland and we will stop for several fun sights along the way.

We arrive in Karlstad in the afternoon. You have time to relax, walk around the city and eat at one of the many vegan friendly restaurants.

Day 4 – Karlstad to Mora

KarlstadMore driving and sightseeing today through the Swedish country side, with some interesting stops along the way. We will visit a beautiful Swedish church and you can find some typical Swedish souvenirs when we stop at a Swedish loppis (second hand shop). The Swedes love loppis and you will too! We visit Sunne and can make a stop in Åmål for those who have seen the Swedish cult classic F*cking Åmål.

In the afternoon, we arrive in Mora, center of Swedish culture, where we set up camp for a few days.

Day 5 & 6 – Mora

Swedish Dalahäst

Mora is a lovely, small town on the edge of lake Siljan, Sweden's sixth largest lake (yes, they are very proud of their lakes). Mora is the birth place of the world famous Vasaloppet, a 90 km cross country ski race. In Summer you can walk the trail, or follow it by bicycle.

Today we will have time for some activities. You can choose to kayak on the lake or the many waterways, bike along the lake or some of the Vasaloppet route or walk in the area. If you want to relax, you can also explore the town, visit a museum or enjoy a drink in one of the cafe's near the water.

On day two in Mora, we will explore the cultural highlights of the area. Today lunch is included and we will eat (if the weather permits) near an old Viking site. In the afternoon, we will visit the world famous Dalahäst (Dala horse) factories. This is where the world famous and iconic Swedish horse is made. A tour guide will tell us all about the process. In the afternoon, we return to Mora, where you will have the rest of the day to do whatever you like.

Day 7 – Mora to Stockholm

Falu GruvaToday we will take our mini-bus to Stockholm. Along the way we will visit a huge disused copper mine, where it is possible to take a tour underground and learn about mining and the famous red paint that adorns many Swedish houses. We arrive in Stockholm in the afternoon, where we will check into our hotel. We have chosen an excellent spot close to many vegan restaurants, shops and within walking distance of the city center.

Day 8 & 9 – Stockholm

StockholmWe start the day with a city walk for those who are interested. On this walk, we take you along many interesting sights of Stockholm. Stockholm is a beautiful city with a lot of history. The city has something for everybody: countless shopping opportunities, so many interesting museums ( a lot of them free!), serene parks, islands and even an amusement park in the middle of the city! Too much to see in one day, but you will get a good idea of the city and will visit many sights.

We start our tour at the fabulous City Hall, walk through Ridderholmen and Gamla Stan for some immersion in history and eat lunch at a fabulous vegan restaurant. In the afternoon, we will take a boat to the Islands and walk along the shore back into the city. We finish our walk with a cup of coffee in the Kungsträdgarden, where there is always something to see. The rest of the day is free to explore. Your tour leader will have many great suggestions for things to see and do. In the evening we will get together for a farewell dinner at a vegan restaurant.

Our last day in Stockholm is also the final day of this vegan tour to Sweden. You can use it to visit those sights you still want to see, to buy some souvenirs, or just relax in a park. Depending on the time of your flight you can make your way to the airport.

Country Information

Climate

In a land as varied as Sweden, the seasons can be quite different depending on where you go.
The country can roughly be divided into three major regions: Götaland in the south, Svealand in the middle and Norrland in the north.
In Götaland, with cities like Gothenburg and Malmö, winters are shorter and milder, while daytime summer temperatures normally range from 15 to 25 degrees Celsius. The air is relatively humid, which makes warm days feel warmer and cold days colder. From Stockholm in the east to southern Norway in the west, Svealand has a climate that is normally a few degrees cooler than that of Götaland.

Transport

Sweden Distances

In Gothenburg and Stockholm we will use the excellent local public transport. Both cities have compact city centers with a lot of walking areas. We will use some ferries and the rest of the tour we will travel in our own mini-bus that can transport up to 9 people. For larger groups we will have 2 mini-buses.

Money

The official currency of Sweden is the Krona. In English, the currency is sometimes referred to as the Swedish crown, as krona literally means "crown" in Swedish. You can withdraw cash from ATM's with a Maestro or Cirrus symbol. Most hotels, shops and restaurants accept credit cards. You can easily exchange your cash Euros or US dollars at money exchange offices. Please be aware that more and more Swedish shops and restaurants are becoming cash free zones. We recommend you bring a credit card or bank card you can use in Sweden.

We recommend you bring with you an amount of cash in Euros or US dollars for emergency purposes. If possible, bring an additional credit and/or debit card for unexpected expenses or emergencies.

Safety and travel advice

For up-to-date information about the security situation in Sweden, please visit the website of your national government. Travelers who reside in The Netherlands can find relevant information on Nederland Wereldwijd.

UK citizens can travel freely and U.S citizens do not need a visa to visit Sweden if the visit is 90 days or less. Please visit the website of the Swedish Government for a list of foreign citizens who need a visa for entry into Sweden.
For more information follow this link.

For those travelers requiring a visa, please ensure yourself of the through time for this application, we recommend to submit your request at least 4 weeks before departure. As a traveler you are responsible for having the right travel documents upon departure.

For emergency purposes make a scan of your passport, visa, and other important documents and mail them to yourself, or put them online in the cloud. In case of theft or loss during the journey, you should always have copies of your important papers on hand.

Vaccinations

Vaccinations for Sweden are not really necessary. The only infectious disease in Sweden that can pose a health risk to travelers is tick encephalitis. This disease occurs in forested areas in Sweden and you are only at risk if you go camping or hiking for more than four weeks in the period from March to November. For a thorough advice, contact your family doctor or a clinic specialized in vaccinations.

Accommodation

Sweden hotel room

All our hotels are located within walking distance of the city/town center and restaurants with vegan food, unless mentioned otherwise in the program. In Sweden we are staying in 4* hotels and 1 excellent 3* hotel. Because the exact accommodation can vary depending on the date and group size, we do not send a list. As a general example, rooms will look something like this:

Our advertised prices are based on double occupancy. If you travel alone and would like to have your own room, we will charge you the single's supplement as specified below. For Sweden, single rooms can only be booked on request, depending on availability. If you would like to share a room we will try to find another traveler of the same sex to share your room with. The single's supplement for this tour is € 400,-.
Rooms are generally fitted with two single beds, unless otherwise requested in your booking form. Double beds can be arranged depending on availability.

If you would like to arrive 1 or more days early, or would like to extend your stay after the tour has ended, we can arrange a room for you in the hotel we are using for the tour. As room prices in Sweden depend on the date and day of the week we cannot give a general price for this extension, contact us for more information.

Practical Information

Level of fitness

For this Travel you need medium level of fitness. You need to be able to walk a fair amount each day. We will explore Gothenburg and Stockholm on foot, but we will walk in a reasonably relaxed tempo. If you are in good health you can easily participate in this journey. Public transport is easily accessible and we will have our own transport for the days we are not in the big cities.
Due to the active nature of the trip this journey is not suitable for people with reduced mobility.

Luggage

We will travel with our own mini-bus, which has limited space. Please bring a small suitcase and perhaps an additional day pack.

Dress

Swedish weather can be a little unpredictable, even in Summer, so pack layers and a wind/water-proof jacket. Sturdy shoes and boots may be good for hiking, cycling or kayaking activities.

Insurance

The costs of health care abroad or an unexpected repatriation can be huge, even in a country like Sweden. To prevent these high costs, you require travel insurance. For all our travels you are thus required to obtain adequate travel insurance for the full coverage of medical assistance and repatriation. Samsara Vegan Travels can ask for proof of this insurance. Failure to comply with this requirement can be cause for cancellation in accordance with our Terms and Conditions.
We also advise you to take out cancellation insurance, but this is not mandatory.

Travel medication

In Sweden most medication such as painkillers, diarrhea tablets, ORS (Oral Re-hydration Salts), disinfectants, anti-histamine tablets and motion sickness tablets are readily available. Some medications can be expensive. If you need something specific, we advise you to take a modest amount with you. If you are bringing medication into the country, make sure these medications are permitted and ask your pharmacy to provide you with a list of subscribed medicines.

In Summer, the Swedish forests can be a paradise for mosquitoes and other insects. Please be advised you might need mosquito repellent, especially when walking the Vasaloppet trail. There will be enough opportunity to buy mosquito repellent in Sweden, but you might want to bring it with you if you like a particular brand.

The Group

Your tour leaders

All travels to Sweden will be accompanied by a Dutch+English+German+Swedish speaking vegan tour leader. The tour leader is the first point of contact during the journey. They are excellent organizers and will be there to answer any questions you might have and help you with any issues that might arrive. Because we value freedom and choice during our travels, our tour leaders operate mostly in the background. They have a lot of knowledge about our destination countries, but they will not shower you with facts and figures all day long. We advise you to bring your own travel guide to get the most out of this trip.
Get to know our tour leaders here.

See the Dates & Prices which vegan tour leader is accompanying you on your tour.
